“When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, “Why are you doing this?” just say this, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.” ’ They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, ‘What are you doing, untying the colt?’ They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,
‘Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!’
Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.”

Welcome you our Palm Sunday service, in-person or online. We hope that how ever you worship, you feel that you are a part of our community of faith. When we gather we become the body of Christ and can work together to offer hope to those in need of it the most. As a community we care for each other and are stronger with the Spirit directing us all.

This week we focus on Jesus arriving in Jerusalem for the final time. This procession is marked by the pageantry of a hero arriving and the hopes of a people expecting the ruling empire being overthrown. Yet Jesus arrived as a humble servant aware of his fate and the need for things to happen as God wished, in order to get the attention of the people. Being humble in life is difficult for many, especially those that become leaders. Too often these people forget the work of serving as God’s messenger. Jesus reminds us of just how a real leader can do the work of sharing God’s love.

“But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.”

This is the fifth Sunday in Lent, and we welcome you our service in-person or online. We hope that how ever you worship, you feel that you are a part of our community of faith. When we gather we become the body of Christ and can work together to offer hope to those in need of it the most. As a community we care for each other and are stronger with the Spirit directing us all.

This week we focus on faith. There are many ideas of what faith might look like or be practiced, yet so often even when we talk a lot about faith, we can have trouble living out the words that we speak. We are challenged to put our actions where our words are and make a match as close as we are able while leaving room for God to fill the gap for us.

“And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.’”

This is the fourth Sunday in Lent, and we welcome you our service in-person or online. We hope that how ever you worship, you feel that you are a part of our community of faith. When we gather we become the body of Christ and can work together to offer hope to those in need of it the most. As a community we care for each other and are stronger with the Spirit directing us all.

This week we will focus on sin. We hear a lot about sin but honestly, these days it is often soft pedaled. We don’t want to name something as sin and thereby offend anyone. God has offered us many ways to work towards the ongoing threat of sin we all face, yet we often try to find ways to slip past those methods and find excuses to resist the healing offered so we can carry on with our lives.

This is the first Sunday in March. As is the custom at St. Andrew’s, we will be sharing Communion. In January, Session has agreed that the time was right for returning to pre-Covid Communion practices. Therefore, we will be passing the elements to congregants from a common tray. We are asking people to sit close to the aisle ends of the pews to help facilitate distribution. It is the practice of the congregation to wait until the elements are distributed to everyone, and then partake together. If you are not comfortable taking the bread and an individual cup from a common tray, please feel free to bring your own elements from home so that you may commune with us. And, if you are worshipping from home via the livestream, perhaps take a moment before the service to prepare some bread and a cup so that you also may participate in Communion with us

“Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said,
‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’
He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them,
‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’
                   ~Mark 8:31-38

This Sunday we welcome Julielee Stitt back to the pulpit. Julielee is an elder of our congregation, and a ministry student at Presbyterian College, Montreal. She led our services many times over the passed couple of years as we searched for a new full time pastor for our church. It will be good to hear her speak to us again! This week she will help us explore Lent and Life.

Evening Prayer. Pierre Edouard Frere. 1857

” And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then in this way:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us to the time of trial,
but rescue us from the evil one.”
                   ~Matthew 6:5-13

This Sunday we welcome the Rev. Heather Kern back to the pulpit. Both Heather and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Paul Kern led our services many times over the passed couple of years as we searched for a new full time pastor for our church. It will be good to hear her speak to us again! This week she will help us explore the idea and activity of “prayer”.

The Transfiguration of Christ. Flemish School, undated.

“For it is God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” ~2 Corinthians 4:6

This week is the final Sunday of Epiphany, called Transfiguration Sunday. This day celebrates the glorious revelation of God in Jesus Christ and Christ’s manifestation as the fulfillment of the law and the prophets. Jesus’ radiant appearance on the mountaintop evokes the devouring fire of the glory of the LORD at Mount Sinai in Exodus 24:17.

The transition from the hope offered to the world at the arrival of Jesus into the world fades, as we begin the trip to Calvary where the Messiah is crucified. The recognition of Jesus as the Son of God helps the disciples understand his words about his short time with them and in this world. When we recognize Jesus as our personal Saviour then we too find that our lives are changed as well.
