Bearing Gifts. Scott Cputsid (Acclamation Gallery)

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy.”
Matthew 2:1-2, 9-10

“The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’”
Jeremiah 23:5-6

Join us on Sunday as we welcome our Music Director – John Hall, and the choir to lead us in a traditional service of Lessons and Carols. Today’s service has evolved from a form of service first conceived in the late 19th century in England. In 1918, King’s College Cambridge performed the first Nine Lesson and Carol service which later became a traditional radio broadcast, continuing to this day. Another set of readings was drawn up by King’s College for use in Advent and this is what we are using in today’s service. Between the readings is a collection of hymns and carols from various sources and countries, from early Christian times up until modern times.

Untitled. Charis Kern 2022

“Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.”
James 5: 7-8

The third Sunday in Advent is Joy. This passage in James speaks of how Joy is birthed out of Patience. In Greek and Latin ‘patience’ translated as long-suffering. James is addressing persecuted Christians with the promise that something good is going to come out of their waiting, their suffering, their perseverance at growing in strength, and their remembering – by reading the prophets who also waited for the first advent. One of Joy’s parents could be named “Patience”.

Annunciation. Leonardo da Vinci. (1472-1476)

“A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.”

(Isaiah 11:1-3)

Join us this Sunday as we welcome the Reverend Heather Kearn to lead once again lead our service.

In her sermon this week, Rev. Kearn will explore how to find God’s peace in the middle of our chaos and confusion.

This is also the first Sunday in December, and as is the tradition at St. Andrew’s, we will be celebrating Holy Communion. We continue to provide individual, sealed Communion packets as you enter the sanctuary. Alternatively, we encourage you to bring your elements from home to use during the service. And if you are joining online, perhaps take a moment before the service to prepare a cup and some bread, so that you may commune with us.

“Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.”
Helen Keller (1880-1968)

This week we welcome Julielee Stitt to conduct our service. Julielee is a ministry student at Presbyterian College Montreal.  She will be speaking to us about “The Best Possession.” Come along to find out what that could be.
This is also the first Sunday in Advent – the beginning of a new church year! We will light the first Advent candle – the candle of HOPE…hope for home, for peace, for justice, for reconciliation, for our Saviour’s return. “Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)

“Mission” is a huge part of the work of the church. Or, more accurately, it IS the work of the church. Traditionally we tend to think of missionaries as people going away for years at a time to work in third world countries. And while that does still happen, a lot of our mission work happens locally – helping people in our own neighbourhoods, cities and counties. This morning we will hear about St. Andrew’s involvement in two of these local mission: Habitat for Humanity and Momentum Campus Ministries.

How do we see Jesus?

In his day, Jesus was viewed in so many different ways.

The crowd saw in him hope and help.
His family viewed him with embarrassment and a desire to control him.
And the authorities saw him with anger and fear.
In the end, perhaps the best lens through which to view Jesus is the one prescribed by the Holy Spirit.
