As a Christian community looking forward to the lifting of pandemic restrictions and ‘beginning again’, we are considering four scenes of the very first beginnings of the Church.
 
This week we will be introduced to Augustine of Hippo, North Africa (354 – 430 A.D.). He became a Christian out of the witness of his mother Monica, and a leader of the Christians of his era. In particular we will consider how as a Christian he responded to the trauma of the fall of Rome, and what we gain from his witness today.
 
The sanctuary doors are open for in-person worship (with physical distancing, wearing of masks and forgoing congregational singing), and live-streaming continues. As we look forward to the lifting of pandemic restrictions and ‘beginning again’ as a Christian community, we are considering four scenes of the very first beginnings of the Church.
 
This week we will be introduced to the wisdom gained by certain women and men of the fourth century. They were not willing (as were so many others) to leave the formulation and articulation of the faith to ‘the Church’. They desired a personal experience of God and God’s Word, and so removed themselves to live in hermit communities in the deserts of Egypt. They came to be known as the Desert Fathers and Mothers, and I believe there is much for us to glean from their experience us as we reconsider our calling as Christians.

Sunday Feb. 13, 10:30 a.m. Beginning Again 2) Perpetua: Witness in the Face of Persecution. Online Only

As we look forward to the lifting of pandemic restrictions and ‘beginning again’, we are considering four scenes of the very first beginnings of the Church.
 
This morning, the story of Perpetua, a young woman of Carthage in the great city of Carthage North Africa at the beginning of the third century. She is a Christian, not by birth but by conversion. She lives during a time when Christians are not understood and are indeed persecuted. Perpetua was a ‘witness’, a ‘martyr’, even to death, shown here with her loyal servant and fellow Christian martyr, Felicity. ‘The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church’.
 
One of the hymns of our service this morning is also from the third century, praise from the pen of Clement of Alexandria (170-220 A.D.) – ‘Jesus, our mighty Lord, our strength in sadness, the Father’s conquering Word, true source of gladness’.
 
As we recall Perpetua and so many like her, surely we ask … What is our Christian witness in this time and place? What sort of witnesses to Christ are we?

As we look forward to beginning again ‘after the pandemic’, I thought I might share four scenes of the first beginning of the Church. This morning, the story of the first Christian on the shores of Europe, Lydia of Philippi (Acts 16). 
 
The music of our worship will include a metrical psalm of old ‘Oh come and sing unto the Lord’, a song that many of us were first introduced to at youth group or camp ’Seek ye first the kingdom of God’, and a prayer set to music ‘May the mind of Christ our Saviour live in me from day to day’.
 
We will conclude the hour by celebrating the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, so you are invited to prepare some bread and a cup as the service begins.

Sunday January 23, 10:30 a.m. Online Only ‘The Bible is the cradle in which Christ is laid’- Martin Luther

In this opening month of a new year, we continue to explore some of the foundational elements of the Christian life. Following themes of ‘Holy God, Holy People’ and ‘Jesus Christ, yesterday today and forever’, we turn our attention to ‘the Bible’. How do we read the holy scriptures, and why? What are the broad contours of the history they share? What is the overarching message of the witness of the Bible? 

Martin Luther’s quote that ‘the Bible is the cradle in which Christ is laid’ provides a wonderful framework for this morning’s exploration and celebration.

Scripture readings from both Old and New Testaments, and hymns that range from something contemporary by Amy Grant to something classic from the Scottish Psalter of 1650 (which is certainly appropriate the Sunday before Robbie Burns Day!)
